I first came here 15 months ago. Seems like a long time, but not really. I was searching for answers and engaging in a hobby of mine(blogging). I have not been disappointed. Sure, there have been trying times but I am glad to have posted here.
Those who have paid attention, know that I have lived an eventful life in the real world. I have owned my own farm, drove a truck, and been a lawyer. I was involved in the rough and tumble world of Mississippi politics on the Democratic side. I have a young wife and 5 children, plus 3 grandchildren(so far).
I also survived a prosecution by the Federal government. The kind that was featured on the front page of the newspaper of the town in which I was raised and lived most of my life, plus the evening news, Statewide. This also invovled some pretty intense investigation by certain government agencies, pretty stressful stuff.
I will not go into lots of details here. What is the point really. I cut a deal with the Feds and I got to go away for awhile. You could out me pretty easy, but what is the point of that. I am leaving in a couple days and it is not optional. Really not anything else anyone can do to me, that has not already been done.
I am glad to go. This has hung over my head for over two years like a cloud of doom, just waiting. Now it will finally be over. I want this chapter closed and this step is necessary.
Today I went to work to turn in my stuff. They gave me a company shirt that everyone had signed wishing me luck and with little messages. That was cool. One of the guys had told me a few days back that I was liked and respected there. That is so cool. I have not always felt those vibes. I have already been offered a better job with the same company, once I return.
I want to thank Jack for running this place and making me feel welcome when I first came here. Also, to the many great posters here(even when we disagreed) much thanks. Thanks also, to those who have left, I sure did enjoy your company.
Who knows what the future holds. I will tell yall what I am telling everyone else. "See ya on the other side"
Cheers!!!

I missed this when it first came out. As part of an ad campaign for the Angry Whopper, Burger King was offering a new facebook app., unfriend 10 friends and get a free whopper. The app. sent them a notice they were sacrificed for a burger. It was disabled by facebook, after a brief run.
I was just wondering if any of you sacrificed any friends for a burger? Would you?

Noom was apparently banned from the Great Orange Satan for using nasty little socks to mock and harass other posters. I am shocked at the allegation. Shocked I tell you!
Noom using socks. I would never have believed that. It must be a mistake. Will MB come to his senses and admit his mistake?
Well Karmafish sure was disappointed. I join in his disappointment with the powers that be. Noom has never used socks anywhere. If you do not believe it just ask him when you see him or his 10 to 30 different accounts that post around these parts. I sure am glad sock puppets don't violate any of our rules.

I was just scrolling along on daily kos, trying to find out what Martha Coakely was doing today and I stumbled into a very sad diary written by a person grieving for their friend who had committed suicide. The diary was called "Grieving via Google" http://www.dailykos.com/story/...
And in the comments section a very nice person named Akronite was offering bits of wisdom like this
http://www.dailykos.com/commen...
Guess what? (0+ / 8-)
Hidden by:operculum, keikekaze, Zikar, Pris from LA, Hunter Huxley, annieli, thepothole, weatherdude
Nobody cares about your dumb dead friend. If after I die my son starts up some internet whining about how people comment on my death, and there is any type of afterlife, I will haunt him constantly until he quits his bitching. Let me know if Sam starts showing up asking you to please grow the fuck up.by Akronite on Thu Jan 14, 2010 at 02:21:04 PM PST
Now, Akronite went on to share many similar bits of wisdom (without once demanding to know who was deleting his comments) and then all of a sudden, another nice person named emn316 shows up to share this:
Splat! (0+ / 3-)
Hidden by:Massman, operculum, FrugalGranny
by emn316 on Thu Jan 14, 2010 at 03:27:33 PM PST
Now, as funny as I find sock puppetry (and usually I think it is hillarious, hidden comments are my favorite), I think this might have been a little over the top. This poor person just wanted to grieve, and someone came along and ruined the whole comment thread. It just wasn't the proper place or time. It was very disrespectful.
Fess up...

Condo is still posting at the GOS. I will post of few of his highlights from time to time just to remind everyone that the rules there mean nothing. They do not even enforce them themselves. Cheers!
What is a little stalking and thread jacking? He did not even seem/want to catch the drift here. BTW: I have no footprints anywhere in these threads.

We knew he would. We knew the koskops would let him slip by. Condo/violia/bottles/glower is posting in the open at the Great Orange Satan right now. Any of you go over there, watch out for this troll.

Saw a diary at the GOS. It was about apologies. Apparently, some users at the GOS have been offended and are leaving because someone said something that hurt their feelings.
It got me wondering if a well-timed, well-worded apology might have kept these two solid Kossack contributors from leaving the fold. I started to wonder why we, as compassionate liberals, don't employ The Apology more often.
We've all been there and done that. In the heat of a debate on some thread, tempers escalate and the next thing you know, you've called someone a name or implied they are an idiot. In a face-to-face conversation you would NEVER dream of speaking to someone like that. But behind the anonymity of a computer screen/keyboard/website, "Did you take your stupid pills?" just comes out. The next thing you know, you're accusing a perfectly liberal Kossack of being "no better than __________" ([blank-fillers include Bush, a neocon, Hitler, etc.])
I did it recently, got called on it and immediately regretted my insensitivity. So I apologized. It took about 1.64 seconds. It didn't hurt. I meant it because I had no business insulting someone I don't even know. And I felt better afterwards.
Then the most amazing thing happened: my apology got Recommended by 17 Kossacks. I got called "classy". Me? Classy? After being mean to someone else? That I was not expecting.
So what constitutes an actual apology? Well, to start, there are non-apologies or "pseudo-apologies". These are the ones that basically say "I'm sorry you're an idiot" or "I'm sorry you're so overly-sensitive". Suite 101 has these as the "Top Pseudo-apologies":
http://www.dailykos.com/story/...
We have had that same problem. Some users here have become offended and left.Got me to thinking, I got to apologize for the bad that I have done. . . . .

After a couple of weeks of spending some time in troll alley at the GOS, (although uprated by a number of trolls at first) the karmafish was suspended. Guessing this was to prevent banning, but who knows. I admit karmafish pisses me off. I have not cared for his politics for sometime. Plus, he hangs out with the worst trolls I have ever had to deal with. Those who like the P side of I/P should love him, he discredits the I side with every word he types.

In Internet culture, a lurker is a person who reads discussions on a message board, newsgroup, chatroom, file sharing or other interactive system, but rarely or never participates actively. Research indicates that "lurkers make up over 90% of online groups" (Nonnecke & Preece 2000). Lack of trust represents one of the reasons explaining lurking behavior (Ridings, Gefen & Arinze 2006).
The term dates back to the mid-1980s. Bulletin board systems (BBS) were often accessed by a single phone line (frequently in someone's home), there was an expectation that all who used a bulletin board would contribute to its content by uploading files and posting comments. Lurkers were viewed negatively, and might be barred from access by the sysop, if they did not contribute anything but kept the phone line tied up for extended periods.
By contrast, many modern Internet communities advise newbies to lurk for some time to get a feel for the specific culture and etiquette of the community, lest they make an inappropriate or redundant comment, ask a Frequently Asked Question, or incite a flame war. This leads to the tongue-in-cheek command to "lurk more". The verb to "de-lurk" means to start contributing actively to a community having been a lurker previously. Lurking in terms of a forum makes sense because the forum is there to educate.
There are also some who lurk on a forum habitually, and rarely, if ever, contribute. It is generally difficult to guess how many such lurkers are present, due to their silence. In flame-wars, a participant who is losing an argument will sometimes claim to receive email support from lurkers. This inspired Jo Walton to write a folk song on the subject entitled "The Lurkers Support Me in Email".

Hell, I admit I have not been paying attention at Daily Kos of late. I am a TU there, still. Just not as Deedogg, a fact that gives great discredit to that site and gives the lie to their claims of Community Moderation. By not involving myself in ratings or any of the fights, in order to keep a low profile, I have made that site quite boring to me. Still how could I have missed the banning of this dumbass?:

Dana Houle is banned from the Great Orange Satan. At least his UID 899 account, not his socks, yet if ever. I blame him for not being able to post there as Deedogg. Ahhhhh, last year about this time, I departed on my yearly vacation from the internet, confident that though I would be taking a break from my impeachment columns, that it would only be a brief pause before digging in for the home stretch of the worst President in the history of the United States (at least until Obusha, who has a chance to pass him). I really can not believe that when last December started I had never heard of FSZ. Neither had I heard of PFF or most of the other blogs out there were democrats are supposed to be welcome. I only really blogged at the dailykos, the Great Orange Satan if you prefer. It was dissatisfaction with being attacked by a couple of trolls on that site that caused me to look around for a safer, more welcoming site. I found this site indirectly from those trolls. They kept accusing anyone they disagreed with of being DFQ, so I googled him, found his site, which referenced this site. At first glance not really impressed. But I kept coming back to lurk and signed up for an account. A day or two latter, I was involved with the kos trolls one night (Alec82 did the posting, but I was reccing him and others) and came over here to lurk, and the users here started talking about what had been happening there. So, I joined in and have been here ever since.
I have seen a number of posters come and go during that time. I have seen some get mad and leave, some of those came back, others did not. I have noticed a few just fade away, with no drama. People come and go, for their own reasons. I have chosen to stay here for my own reasons. Let us explore why.

The other day I responded to an entry at OpenLeft.com that pertained to the ratings-bump Obama experienced during the Sotomayor nomination. That comment, which violated no rules, was hidden by a pair of users because they took offense with a single word used to describe the current occupant of the Oval Office. The word is "dictator," and it is the unvarnished truth. Unfortunately, the truth is too much for far too many alleged left-wingers to handle.
The abusers of the rating system are TValley and fbihop. Without offering so much as one word of argument, one challenge to my description of Obama, my comment was hidden for no other reason than the two individuals who troll-rated it found the truth unpleasant. Regardless of whether one agrees with such an assessment of the guy or not, the comment violated no terms of service and did not deserve to be hidden. I requested in-diary that the hide-rating be annulled and my comment restored to visibility within the thread. I also requested more strenuous oversight of the rating privileges so that such abuse is weeded out. Otherwise, Open Left risks turning into another Daily Kos.
Below is my comment, in full.

Not to mention, it's hard to uniformly enforce the rules if the rules themselves are lacking! The current rule book is not even an official document, but an FAQ maintained by outside community members without the benefit of this site's official assistance. Those volunteers update the rules in the FAQ whenever I make a proclamation on this site, but oftentimes those proclamations are little more than throwaway comments in response to a specific situation, without regard to broader ramifications of what I'm saying (or even if I'm contradicting myself with past edicts). So while the community craves a rulebook with clear delineation of unacceptable behavior, I've failed to provide. Part of that comes from my desire to let the community establish its own code of conduct, but that laissez faire approach doesn't always work best.

Controversial 9/11 Diaries
DailyKos accepts that the 9/11 attacks were perpetrated by agents of Al-Qaeda. It is forbidden to write diaries that:
1. refer to claims that American, British, Israeli, or any government assisted in the attacks
2. refer to claims that the airplanes that crashed into the WTC and Pentagon were not the cause of the damage to those buildings or their subsequent collapse.

A little Meta for your day. Make it the right color. With awards for the winners.
1- taylormattd No award just shit. I think this one is self explanatory. He really worked hard to be number one. The first paragraph of this gets him on the list:
Hello - I came back to read a couple of (0+ / 0-)
sboucher's recent diaries after seeing sboucher was rescued tonight, and I found this thread. As you may know, I am not a person who likes FSZ. And that's to say the least, lol. It's my opinion that, aside from an exceedingly small number of good people that occasionally post quality content there, that site is a cesspool of peeder / MLW / Daily Kos banees who are fairly unstable at best.
I don't want you to think I'm some kind of apologist for that site; I'm not. Posters there have written nasty and false diaries and comments about me and people I consider friends.
So those are my credentials.
I understand that you appear to be in some kind of fight with blueness. I think you should stop. blueness is a good, thoughtful poster here at Daily Kos, and usually has very good advice. It seems to me the conversation between you two has degenerated. I don't feel comfortable opining on who is more at fault, nor do I think it would be productive, so I won't.
I would, however, like to respectfully request that you take blueness' advice regarding sockpuppet allegations. Also, I'd ask that you decline making implications that blueness is some sort of anti-DKos denizen of FSZ. Because that simply isn't accurate. blueness posted there to defend a friend, and because of the threats of outings.
I sincerely appreciate you listening to my ravings; I don't mean to come across as bossy, and I hope you won't take it that way.
Peace. :)
