Tonal and Nagual
Encyclopedia of Religion
Below follow several excerpts from the book by Carlos Castaneda Tales of Power (in these excerpts the term nagual means the non-material world):
"The tonal begins at birth and ends at death, but the nagual never ends. The nagual has no limit. The nagual is where Power hovers."
"For the nagual, there is no land, or air, or water. Therefore, the nagual glides, or flies, or does anything it can do in the time of the nagual, which is not related at all to the time of the tonal. These two things do not intersect."
"The tonal and the nagual are two different worlds. In one you talk, in the other you act." |

The Toltecs look at creation as consisting of the Nagual and the tonal. The Nagual is all that is. It is unstructured. The Nagual condenses and the tonal is formed. The tonal is structured energy. The average person only perceive the tonal. As we move into the world of energy we enter, what is referred to by the Toltecs as the Second Attention.
The Second Attention is the world of energy. As all form comes from energy there are many benefits gained from the ability to negotiate and maneuver in the Second Attention. The Second attention is not bound by space and time. When in the Second Attention we are able to "see" events before they come into manifestation. We can "see" patterns of energy before they manifest into form.
To perceive energy we must raise our frequency. To raise our frequency we must begin by cleaning, clearing, healing and strengthening the human tonal, or the our bodies of structure. The human tonal consists of three bodies, the mental body, the emotional body and the physical body. Each body of structure in the human has a specific purpose and function. It is important that each body function properly or there is dysfunction in the human system. A dysfunctional tonal blocks our ability to perceive the Nagual and the Second Attention, or at best any perception we have is perverted.
Nagual
Wikipedia
In Mesoamerican folk religion, a Nagual or Nahual (both pronounced [na'wal]) is a human being who has the power to magically turn him- or herself into an animal form, most commonly donkey, turkey and dogs,[1] but also other and more powerful animals. The Nagual can then use his powers for good or for evil causes according to his personality.[2] The specific beliefs vary within Mesoamerica, but the general concept of nahualism is pan-Mesoamerican. It is also linked with pre-Columbian shamanistic practices, because depictions of humans transforming themselves into animals are known as early as Preclassic times in the Olmec culture. The practice is also sometimes linked with the Mesomerican calendrical system which can be used for divination rituals, often for example determining whether or not a person will be a Nagual. The common Mesoamerican belief of tonalism, that all humans have an animal counterpart to which their lifeforce is linked, also often intertwines with nagualism.[3] In English the word is often translated as "transforming witch," but translations without the negative connotations of the word witch would be "transforming trickster" or "shape shifter".[4]
Nagualism

Nagualism (pronounced nah-wa'hl ism) [1] Nagual refers to three subset definitions within the books of Carlos Castaneda The first, Nagual as source of the universe, the second being, Nagual as the spiritual realm outside known reality and third Nagual as spiritual leader of a group of apprentice warriors. The first, refers to a fundamental yet inconceivable dimension of reality that may be harnessed by a 'man of knowledge' or 'sorcerer' (Spanish: Brujo). According to the philosophy of Nagualism some individuals store "energy" to make use of such "Powers" [2]. Such a person (who is referred to as a Nagual - cf. nagual) is able to lead apprentices of the "Warriors Path" and other receptive persons to dimensions of higher consciousness. . Thus Carlos Castaneda's spirit guide, Nagual Don Juan Matus, often referred to himself as the Nagual for his "party of warriors" - warrior here referring to ones who walk the "Warriors Path" to become a 'Men of Knowledge'. (It should be noted here that woman also play and equal role within Nagualism. The wording could be "Women of Knowledge" and imply equal status within the group.) To understand the nagual one is instructed to: "... Turn everything into what it really is, the abstract, the spirit, the Nagual."[citation needed] this is the final definition of Nagual given in the body of work by Carlos Castaneda. The ultimate power of the universe is also referred to as the "Eagle".
In the worldview of Don Juan Matus's, reality is seen as multi-dimensional or multi-faceted reality that under ordinary circumstances human beings only perceive in part; the known part of reality with which humans are familiar is called the Tonal. The spiritual Nagual is that dimension of reality for which we are not conscious but is in fact constitutes the greater part of reality. Here the Nagual bears some resemblance to the psychoanalytic concept of the unconscious. It has also been said that the Nagual is all that is, and that it condenses to form the Tonal. The Nagual and the Tonal as dual aspects of reality and being such are perceived either through the First Attention, where we experience the Tonal, or the Second Attention where we experience the Nagual. To Castaneda the Tonal is often associated with the masculine aspect of the universe and the Nagual to the feminine. The Tonal can roughly be linked to the concept of Ego or conscious mind. Three states are described in the text by Castaneda, the known, the unknown and the unknowable. |
