Is Barack Obama a (political) Cad?

(Cartoon by Tom Tomorrow, used w/out permission)

Dan Savage is disappointed.

As well he might be. A prominent GLBT advocate, writing in The Advocate, Savage provides a snarkily inflected list of all the ways that Obama has let down the GLBT community:

Remember when he practically spooned Melissa Etheridge during the Logo-Human Rights Campaign debate? Remember when he positioned himself to the left of Hillary Clinton on the Defense of Marriage Act? While Clinton came out in favor of a partial repeal, Obama said he favored -- and would fight for -- a complete repeal, and described DOMA as "abhorrent."
Good times, good times.
hen there was Barack Obama's open letter to the gay community. "Equality is a moral imperative," candidate Obama wrote, before reiterating his promise to repeal DOMA. He also promised to end "don't ask, don't tell," to pressure Congress to pass the Matthew Shepard hate-crimes act, and to lift the HIV travel ban. And then this line in particular jumped out at me, as it must have for other gay parents: "As your President, I will use the bully pulpit to urge states to treat same-sex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws."
Promises to keep...Ah, the hope!
tokin woody :: Is Barack Obama a (political) Cad?
But the highlight of the campaign for me came during the vice-presidential debate. An Obama-Biden administration would support civil unions for same-sex couples, Joe Biden said, adding that there should be "no distinction from a constitutional standpoint or a legal standpoint" between same-sex and opposite-sex couples (except for the "marriage/civil unions" distinction). When Sarah Palin said that she didn't support same-sex marriage either and that she agreed with Biden that the federal government shouldn't "do anything to prohibit" visitation or other rights, Biden moved in for the kill: "I take her at her word, obviously, that she thinks there should be no civil rights distinction, none whatsoever, between a committed gay couple and a committed heterosexual couple."
But of course we now know he's reneged on or backed substantially away from most of those promised relief. So now Savage, the unrequited suitor is disappointed, and asks: Is Obama A "One-Night Stand," the guy who tells you he loves you only to get into your pants?

Well, yes, yes he is, Dan.

From "jump-street," that's how it's been. Savage's complaint is echoed up and down the 'liberal/progressive' constituencies Obama co-opted and then abandoned, from gays to anti-war partisans, to health-care reform advocates, to climate-change activists, to financial reform advocates. He's betrayed 'em all, in ways large and small... Not merely a one-niter: A "One-TERM Stand," more likely.

Obama is president now because the Owners needed to put somebody in power who would deflect and distract attention, accountability, blame and responsibility from their "favorite/dominant" wing of the Party of Property and Privilege, the fascist GOP.

From the reactions out in Mid-dull Murka--the teabaggers, the birfers, the elimiinationists, the survivalists, the scores of thousands of unabashed racists occupying the headlines and the top stories in the Cabloids--you can see he was the perfect choice. By the end of this year, the "press" will totally have forgotten that Bush and the Pukes are the villains of this piece. Obama will own 'em all.

Not only will he be unable to reform or reverse ANY of the bushevik clusterfucks, but his race makes it possible for the Pukes to resurrect their "southern" strategy, but this time as a "50-state" plan.

One way or any other, Obama's toast, a designated one-termer: the Right's payback for GHWB.

Bush/Palin, '12 (Jebbie, this time)... bettabuck...

Jeb Bush running for POTUS in 2012? (0.00 / 0)
Hmmmmm.....not sure about that.  Something tells me that Dubya stuck the last nail in the Bush family's coffin, if you all get the drift.

"It does not take a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brush fires of freedom in the minds of men." -- Samuel Adams (1722-1803)

You'd have thought (5.67 / 3)
that after Poppy Bush ran the country into the ground by starting expensive wars and running the economy into the ground, people might have been smart enough not to even consider voting for his idiot son.  But they weren't.

You'd have thought that maybe after Bill Clinton turned to the right after being elected with welfare reform and NAFTA and repealing Glass Steagall that maybe people would have seen the same coming from Obama, especially after he changed his mind on the illegal wiretapping and pressed for the bank bailout before he was even elected.

Don't forget what H L Mencken said -

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats. -H. L. Mencken

I agree totally (4.00 / 2)
I have spent my life supporting dumbasses against evil bastards.  Yeah I supported Obama, but he was not my first choice(hell, he was not top ten).  I just can not do anything to help the Republicans because they do little to help me, and a lot to hurt.  When I voted in the primary there were two real options, Clinton or Obama.  When I voted in the general there were two real options Obama or McCain(and all of his crazy supporters).  So what do you do?  I did not vote for a candidate that would not break 1%.

Voters are stupid, Haley Barbour is governor of my state.  I mean damn, how stupid can you get.  Both of his opponents had serious shortcomings, but I supported them till it bled.

Will Obama be the democratic nominee in 2012?  Probably.  Will I support him if he is?  Probably.  Am I happy about that?  Hell no!  Do I have any other options, really?  Not that I can see.  Obama does not disappoint me, he isn't doing much worse than I expected.  Ok, a few things are worse.

Cheers!

I wrote in my OWN ticket at the polls on election day last November, (0.00 / 0)
instead of voting the Obama/Biden ticket....and I'm glad I did.

Is this Obama's "Cronkite moment?" (5.00 / 1)
Like when LBJ said...

"That's it. If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost middle America."

Except of course in this case it would be...

"That's it. If I've lost Tom Tomorrow, I've lost the everything left of the Blue Dogs."

But about middle America...

What the fuck is that?

What has his toast to do with anything? (5.00 / 1)
No/Toast

As in... (0.00 / 0)
(same tune as Battle Hymn of the Republic)

"I'm the toast of Tallahatchee
and the bee's-knee in Dubuque,
and I will tell you lies
and steal your pies
and make you eat my puke!
O-Ba-Ma is a JERK!"

And it started a war with some nitwit... (0.00 / 0)
I think he's skewering the left, as much, if not more (than Obama).

Right. Tom Tomorrow is skewering the Left with this cartoon!

Obama's little friends are so creative!
