I know it's the RC but still.

If your apology for the ass-raping that is Windows Vista is yet another program where "Digital Signatures" are for "my safety" and you strip me of all control of my system with the use of a "TrustedInstaller" account that is a god over my computer, then go fuck yourself Bill Gates.

Stickin' with the XP.

i'm the one
i've been here for you all along
i'm the one
who's shoulder you've been cryin on
nice guys finish last
no one knows as good as me
we're just good friends
and you come to me for sympathy
you tell me that i'm not your type
still you call me late at night
everytime he picks a fight
after all he's said and all he's done
i'm the one
i've been here for you all along
i'm the one
who's shoulder you've been cryin on
he's a total dick
that's the truth and you know i'm right
from everything you say
theres no way he'll ever do you right
you love a man who treats you wrong
you think you'll change him
but you're wrong
he'll use you he'll say so long
after all he's said and all he's done
i'm the one
i've been here for you all along
i'm the one
who's shoulder you've been cryin on
i'm the one who wants you more than anything
you don't feel the same way you made it clear to me
but i'll stand my ground and maybe
you'll hear what i've been sayin
after all i've said and all i've done
i'm the one
i've been here for you all along
i'm the one
who's shoulder you've been cryin on
i'm the one
i've been here for you all along
i'm the one
who's shoulder you've been cryin on

After using Vista on 3 of the 5 computers I use at work (5.00 / 3)
there isn't a chance in hell I would ever put Vista on my home computer.  I wish they'd "downgrade" the comps at work, all of them.  Luckily, due to compatibility issues with specific software at my job, the two I use most predominantly have to remain XP.

Good... (4.67 / 3)
Windows 7 had such promise but this went downhill fast after I put it on the Virtual Machine.

I saw "Trusted Installer" account and 8 svchost.exe processes.

No bueno.

If they stripped the babysitter controls and laid off trying to automatically engulf whatever it detects within a 5 mile radius it be great. But it's just another factory installed OS somebody like me is gonna have to uninstall to put XP back on it.

Balls madam.  Pure balls I say.

I know nothing about the 7 "upgrade" (4.50 / 2)
Is "trusted installer" just the new term for the admin account or something beyond that?

I have had absolutely no problems with my computer since I built it with a barebones case/motherboard 16 months or so ago using XP as the OS.  Can't imagine a reason I'd change the OS, given that....and especially given the fact that the bullshit upgrade to 98 was complete crap (Windows ME....not even an upgrade, just adding bells and whistles and a hundred fold tendency to fuck shit up) ... and the upgrade from XP, Vista, is a complete load of shit....

That's one thing Apple has over MS, when they upgrade, it's actually an upgrade for the most part and not just a fucking scam to get people to buy more shit.   If 7 is a load of shit as well, that's even more awesome since they're giving it away for free to licensed Vista users.

I'm amazed my XBox hasn't exploded in a big ball of flames, or at least crashed, given who it's made by.  Seems I'm one of the lucky ones in that regard but my time will come as does every XBox owner's.

Red ring of death tomorrow.... (5.00 / 1)
becuase you said that.

Vista ate that device too and made me Windows Live Id and shit.

The best is when that happens with the computer retarded who have their music from their comp goin through their Xbox360 and you start blasting their porn files at their mom's house.

Not that I know anyone who would ever do that.

I'm running a Black XP 35 VII Ultimate clean and fast.

The wife has a Mac for home and PC laptop for work.

I got her old Mac lappy which has grown on me but I like my PC for some reason.

Heh (0.00 / 0)
I was in the process of helping a friend force a Red Ring of Death because his xbox went down to another issue that many people were having as time went on and days later Microsoft extended their warranty to cover this issue along with RROD even out of warranty.

Process that for the curse logic, not sure if that makes me mentioning it good or bad lol.

I'll Take A Wild Guess (0.00 / 0)
Maybe Jack tried the "Virtual Machine" mode of Windows Seven to run XP programs, and saw all these processes and such (things that run quietly in the background). The installer is probably something that checks programs being installed for "legitimacy" or whatever.

I still use Win 98. No big problems, and it sure seems twice as fast as XP. But I'll have to move someday, it seems, since it is harder to find compatible programs now, etc. Maybe I'll try Ubuntu or something.

I now have all the "pieces" needed for my insane plot to take over the internet. It's entirely legal, but I'm not sure I have the nerve to actually do it.

as long as you have enough ram then xp will be faster than 98 (0.00 / 0)
I'm running xp on this one with just a gig of ram and an Athlon 64 Dual Core 3800 and it runs very fast.  I've rarely ever seen it show the tiniest bit of lag... and that cup is already a couple of years out of date.   That's a pretty cheap setup now, $50 or so, and unless you're planning on playing games or doing intensive graphic stuff, it'd run xp like a champ and never show lag as long as you keep the drive in order.

and the ram is the most important factor if xp is running really slow for you (0.00 / 0)
I wouldn't run xp with less than a gig of ram.  I tried it with 512mb a few years back and it very obviously was lacking and lagged a lot.   A gig is about 10 bucks now i think.

Thanks Lauren (0.00 / 0)
I was extremely leery of XP from the git-go. Just my lack of faith in MS. I'm too bullheaded to deal with any more MS stuff. I didn't know what a "Black XP" was, but now I've found some interesting tech support and "ethical hacking" sites!

Black XP is often infected with spyware and viruses. Reformat and install a legit copy of XP. Thread closed.

Hmmm.

I come from an electronics background, and software is not of great interest to me. I learned the "C" language and could write tiny programs, but it was messy as hell. Computing is inherently not very secure, and I think we may all wake up to find we are pwned one day. The attacks on my machine have fallen off drastically in the last two years - Win 98 simply does not "support" much malware anymore!

My plot to take over is somewhat real. I've found software that can be perverted (by anyone) to allow websites to be tied together. So if I and some other people each have a (free, or stand-alone) WordPress blog, we can basically "tie" the sites together so that anything "frontpaged" on one blog will also be "frontpaged" on the others (content providers / feed subscribers). Each blog would have it's own selectable group of "providers." So if everyone simply goes to their own blog, all their "buddies" will have their posts waiting there.

ubuntu would be too resource intensive for that (0.00 / 0)
machine.  Use u-lite.

http://u-lte.org  .  It is made for computers of that vintage, and uses ubuntu repos so you have the same program selection.

Windows 7 ain't nearly as bad a virus as xp on an non-user/administrative account.

Over at the big Satan we call it FV (5.00 / 2)
for Fucking Vista, and for good reasons. Try Safari, works like a charm with Windows, ditch Firefox, equally useless with FV, even if you do download their latest Safety Packets...but the Mac is so fucking superior, can't wait to go back to it when money becomes less scarce.

spare me (0.00 / 0)
you only have a right to bitch about window/winblows if you use linux.

Windows 7 copies linuxes best features, to make it less virus prone, if that burst your bubble because you have to become puter literate, tuff shit!   You are probably posting from a user account and giving everyone viruses.

This is a good version of linux for old puters like yours

http://u-lite.org.

Use it or something of the like an I might have the time of day!

You Work For Gates? (0.00 / 0)
"You are probably posting from a user account and giving everyone viruses."

No, I only post from a non-user account.

After 30 years in electronics, and even a bit of experience hacking programs (not much, but a little), I must know something. What is your problem here?

And U-Lite seems to be in alpha (experimental, not for ordinary use)!

are you jack? (0.00 / 0)
0.9 is alpha, 0.8 is ready to go.  It can be downloaded from the download page.

The things jack is complaining about all come from vista/7 forcing people to do daily work with a user account.  This is actually a good thing.  The fact that xp lets people do everything from administrative, including go online, is the reason it is such a virus magnet.  The only reason to complain is if you go online in an administrative account on xp, and know nothing about security and don't care to learn.  Such people would hate mac and linux as well.

Shit, You Really Must Work For Gates (0.00 / 0)
The Dupe-built Wikipedia:

On September 10, 2008 Canonical emailed the Ubuntulite developers complaining the project's use of Canonical's names, URLs, and logos violates Canonical's trademarks.[2] After multiple surveys, the name U-lite was chosen on November 6, 2008.[3]

These "U-Lite" people come from nowhere, and have no backing from anyone I've heard of. Why not stick with Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS? "U-lite Linux Project," which is behind it, has only 13 hits on Google!

Are you sure you know what you are talking about? I've never heard of anyone catching a "virus" via a something posted in a website. It may have happened via posted images, but it's not a significant concern.

Also, if people have to run XP in administrative mode to get a "virus," then why do people bother with firewalls, antivirus programs, etc? Eh? I have a good firewall, three good antivirus programs, one of which monitors the internet, disk access, etc. continuously, and Firefox with NoScript. I just installed a new mother board, so it can probably can handle at least XP.

The problems Jack encountered with Windows 7 are mostly due to the installer program not letting him install things, or something like that. Of course Microsoft watches over you like a prison guard. For your own "security."

[ Parent ]
because most of them do (0.00 / 0)
run it in administrative, thus, they must run antispyware, antiviruses, and firewalls.

The installer won't let him install unless he uses the password to the administrative account.   That is the sign of a good os.

Who cares how many hits u-lite has had on google.  Install pclinuxos if you want.

[ Parent ]
While I'm At It (0.00 / 0)
It took quite a bit of searching to find even the suggestion that U-lite is open source. It took a hell of a lot of searching to find the claim that it is GPL (General Public License) licensed. How do you expect anyone to go near the thing unless you clearly state that it's open source and GPL?

I don't get it. Your public relations angle is way off.

[ Parent ]
look at the bottom of (0.00 / 0)
u-lite homepage.

We have had over 900 downloads of the live cd in the past month.  I am pretty happy.

[ Parent ]
All It Say Is: (0.00 / 0)
"©2007-2009 U-lite Linux Project | U-lite Linux is a trademark of U-lite Linux Project"

"The registered trademark Linux® is used pursuant to a sublicense from LMI, the exclusive licensee of Linus Torvalds, owner of the mark on a world-wide basis."

This has nothing to do with open source code (the raw program is published), or with freeware licensing (the program can be given to anyone for free, as in free beer, as in GPL). None of that is there.

Not only that, but an additional 0.9KB of code needs to be downloaded for it to work after the installation. I've never seen anything like this. What is going through your minds?

[ Parent ]
btw jack, even if you use xp (0.00 / 0)
you should still be using a limited user account to go online and not an adminstrative account.  Your use of administrator makes you a sitting duck for malaware.

http://search.techrepublic.com...

I am not into windows.  I am actually one of the developers of u-lite, but there are informed and uninformed criticisms of Windows.  We linux people have always criticized it for allow the user to go online in administrative and we believe this is the reason windows is a virus magnet.  When the typical windows user then snipes at bill gates for making them use user accounts you undo years of constructive criticism.
